Calliandra is a very common, low branching shrub or small tree. It has evergreen oblong leaves and auxiliary, compound, showy pink flowers, like a powder puff. It is an excellent container plant. It can also be used for bonsai. The plant produces flowers all the year round.

The leaves are thin and pointed with a silk-like texture.


The plant becomes covered in striking red-orange flowers, like powder puffs.


The plant needs to be grown in full sun.


It requires a warm temperature.

Regular watering during the growing season.

Pest and Problems:

Susceptible to attacks by Aphids, Mealybugs, Spider Mites and Thorn Bugs. Ample sunlight and free-air movement help deter harmful insects.

Growth habit:

It is a fast grown plant and can reach up to 15 feet if allowed to.


Apply balanced liquid fertilizer once a month.


Trim after it finishes blooming. Regular pruning is needed to keep the growth of plant in check.


Propagation s done from large cuttings which root easily. It also grows very easily from seed. The seeds need to be soaked first.
