Slugs are fleshy, slimy animals. They may be light brown to black. They are among the most bothersome pests in many gardensSlugs rasp leaves, stems, flowers, or roots. Slugs may produce holes in the leaves or just scar the leaf surface. Silvery slime trails appear where they have crawled over surfaces. Control:
Eradication and control of slugs and snail is difficult and costly. In the first step you should remove slug’s daytime hiding or resting places such as plant debris, stone and weedy areas. Tall and densely growing plant should be thinned to allow more sunlight and air movements. You can control the population of slug and snails by hand picking. Research has shown that beer can be used to control slugs. With the non-alcoholic beer with slight edge, slugs are attracted to the yeast in the beer. They crawl into the dish; pan or can and gets drown. Bury a can upto its rim in the soil and fill it with the stale beer. You can also sprinkle salt on the slugs because salt sprinkling dries out the slugs. Slugs avoid crawling over anything dry, dusty or scratchy such as gravel and sand. The excessive secretion of mucus needed to cross such material soon exhaust them and they die. A border 18-24 inches wide of anyone of these materials should be helpful in controlling slug and snails. Slug baits containing metaldehyde may be used for control. |
